Review of Orpheus (2013) by Joe L — 14 Jul 2009
One of very few films on my list that I immediately watched again. this is absolute perfection in the art of visual storytelling. it is every bit as inventive as 'citizen kane.' what seems to start as a standard 1950's character-based drama quickly shifts gears when major characters begin walking through mirrors.
the visual effects are almost entirely in-camera, and are so creatively executed, that I had to watch them several times to dissect how it was done. but beyond the image trickery, the story is a solid (and interestingly layered) retelling of the orpheus myth, using the framework to comment on the fragile state of marital relationships.
maria casares is magnificent as 'death,' and in a trick peter greenaway stole for 'the cook, the thief..,' her costume changes from black to white depending on her psyche. tricks aside, it is her performance that is most arresting.
her small but pivotal role in 'children of paradise' is also worth checking out.
