Review of Orphan (2009) by Morgan L — 13 Aug 2011
Now I don't like scary movies much, they usually lack an interesting plot and are based on either shock effect (although that's losing it's effectiveness every year) or how STARTLED they can get someone, never are scary movies actually, well, scary.
While this still holds true for this movie it is probably the better horror movies of the 21st century. It's more of a twisty and psychological thriller but I will count it. Starting out with this little sweet and intelligent girl by the end you realize that there IS something wrong with Esther.
There is no magical, technological, or other bullcrap explanation for it either (another thing I hate about horror films) that most horror movies have; it is a truly a situation that is, while unlikely, believable and possible.
I had unfortunately heard the ending from a television show so I don't think I could fully get the effect of the twist but I still wondered, even though I knew the twist, what was going to happen next.
This "horror" film gives me faith for future horror films by going back to the roots of the evil child genre and bring back what made them great. Must watch if your a Horror film buff and great horror film to scare the average family.
This is not one to put in the background though, you need to pay attention; if your looking for a cheap easy to watch horror film that's "great" watch Dead Alive. If your looking for the more serious horror film I will personally guarantee you that you will not be disappointed.
