Review of Orlando (2007) by Daniel K — 08 Sep 2011
2: Just like Zazie dans le Metro, Orlando was not what I was expecting. At first I couldn't figure out why Tilda Swinton, despite her relatively androgynous nature, was playing a man, until she turned into a woman about halfway through the film and two hundred years into her life.
Sound strange enough for you? There were scenes of beauty and brilliance, such as the flight through the maze, but overall all the pieces just didn't fit together into a cohesive whole. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood, but the deep philosophical themes that someone like Roger Ebert read into the film just didn't seem to be there for me.
I can see why some would adore the picture, but I didn't.
