Review of Orlando (1992) by Melissa H — 01 Apr 2009
Oh how I adore Sally Potter's mastermind. This film had such a fascinating concept and was wonderfully dated! Tilda Swinton was absolute perfection for this role, no one could've handled it but her or have the look.
It was interesting how the film was split up and to watch her gain new knowledge of the world over the course of 400 years, the film was slow and at times and confusing/weird to watch her as a man BUT ohh my when she turns into a woman the film really turns around! I love love LOVE how she kicks societies butt with her conversation with men as a strong, independent, all knowing and educated woman, saying exactly what she has learned to the men as a woman with what she had experienced.
Ending-unsatisfying and disappointing though, I think she didn't use these 400 years to her advantage enough...so that was semi-disappointing. Goodness this film was weird but such an intriguing concept!
