Review of Ordinary People (1980) by Chad C — 11 Sep 2007
It doesn't get much better than this. I do major tears every time. Loved the subject matter, and loved the moving depiction of it even more. Easily one of my all-time favorites. Survivor guilt, depression, suicide, a cold mother, a warm but ineffectual father, a moody/brooding son, a sickeningly bourgeois chicago suburb.
Sounds like a soap opera. But robert redford knew what he was doing, and so did each of his actors. There is not a single slouch among this brilliant cast. Timothy Hutton got shafted with a best "supporting" actor instead of the real deal.
And, i'm not afraid to say it, I'm glad this got the best picture award over Raging Bull: IMHO, I enjoyed OP more. I feel this movie gets overlooked a lot nowadays, and I enjoy showing it to people who have never seen/heard of it.
The reaction is almost always overwhelmingly positive.
