Review of Ordinary People (1980) by Prasad P — 24 Mar 2008
An absolutely superb human drama, about tragedy, loss and its consequences. Timothy Hutton truly deserved to win his Oscar for the portrayal of Conrad Jarrett, struggling against suicide over the loss of his star older brother.
Mary Tyler Moore is a revelation as the mother who refuses to deal and Donald Sutherland, an underrated actor if any, gives his role a quiet emotional punch. As director, Robert Redford excels in garnering strong performances from an exceptional cast, always keeping the emotional truth and power in a still moving, ultimately challenging movie.
