Review of Ordinary People (1980) by Drew S — 04 May 2008
Ordinary indeed. Dull, trite, cliche-ridden, and overlong, this is one of the weakest Best Picture winners of all time ( It certainly didn't deserve to beat "Raging Bull" that year). Moore's hysterical overacting hasn't aged well, and the romantic subplot between Hutton and McGovern never feels entirely convincing.
Sutherland's admittedly good performance is the best thing about this otherwise overrated movie.
