Redford's direction was superb, from the little nuances of each character that told volumes without spoonfeeding the audience to the excellent use of shadow, light, sound and silence all throughout the film.
Although the story wasn't anything unusual or fantastic, this movie absolutely blew me off my feet with the sheer emotional force of it.
