Review of Ordinary People (1980) by Simon D — 23 Jun 2010
Ok, so maybe Raging Bull wasn't so completely robbed after all.
When I first started to watch this movie I thought "Ok, let's see what film was supposedly better than Raging Bull". Har har har, like that's gonna happen. And the beginning of this movie was rough. It wasn't all that interesting and it had some poor dialogue which made the characters sound like actors reading lines rather than actual people.
But then it become one of those movies that slowly and steadily got better as it peeled back the layers of each of the characters, and at the end I was thinking "Wow, that was a damn good movie" almost despite myself. This was a movie which just took three interesting characters and spent three hours developing them and their personal tragedy, and man did it ever work by the end.
Was this better than Raging Bull? Tough call. But realistically when I'm thinking "Which of these 5 star movies was better?" then it becomes a situation in which there are no wrong answers.
