Review of Ordinary People (1980) by Caiti A — 10 Aug 2010
Powerful, intense, depressing, but perfectly acted and shot. This movie (redford's first at the helm) will make you cry and make you mad. Mary Tyler Moore's role was crucial and painstakingly frustrating.
It's probably one of Donald Sutherland's best acting films...he wasn't given shoddy lines like Outbreak ("Billy, are you dumb or somethin?" - I rest my case). I have a new respect for Timothy Hutton.
The fact that he won an oscar for this film is one thing...the fact that he did it at 20 years old completely blows him out of the water in my opinion. I was floored by his acting. I was young and stupid at 20.
...he was winning oscars. I loved this movie...it was so believable and so sad...and I'll probably never watch it again. But I'll look back on it and say "oh, THAT's the one where Timothy Hutton made a name for himself".
