Review of Ordinary People (1980) by Warren W — 12 Dec 2010
First off, what an amazing script, written to reflect the very mundane patterns of "boring" conversations we find everyday. But undercutting all of that are moments of dialogue in which the character development occurs by how much they aren't saying or fail to understand each other - very true to life itself.
Timothy Hutton carries the film with his take on a troubled teen, and does a very convincing job of it. Each of the other actors holds their own and brings to life this difficult but powerful film to its open-ended conclusion.
(i.e. spoiler: Don't look for a happy resolved ending here - also kinda like life, eh?).
