Review of Ordinary People (1980) by Mickey — 03 Oct 2008
If you love Mary Tyler Moore, you're not going to like her here - you're going to LOVE her because she plays a distant mother who lost one of her children and is cold toward her other son (Timothy Hutton) mainly because, I think, she blames him for the others death.
Calvin (Donald Sutherland), who I normally don't like is flawless as the glue that is trying to keep his family together, while pretty much coming apart himself. Judd Hirsh, of tv's TAXI, has a great supporting role as the surviving son's psychiatrist.
Flawless performances, great direction (Robert Redford), and a lovely, moving picture about love, loss, and the family dynamic.
