Review of Ordet (1955) by Ewan M — 10 Jun 2007
I couldn't believe how amazing this movie was. I'm a spiritual person and often look for spiritual aspects/symbolism/metaphors in film. I thought Ordet touched on the kind of spirituality I could really appreciate.
Dreyer's main theme is the difference between faith through fear of sin and death vs. faith through enjoyment of life. He does an excellent job portraying faith through enjoyment of life with the characters he gives us. Each and every character is deep and real, dealing with complex issues, doubts, and questions. All in all, the film sort of propogates that faith through enjoyment of life is essential and the 'correct' way to live. I can't help but completely agree. I love every aspect of this film including the conclusion (which most seem to count as this film's only downfall). Personally, I thought it fit in perfectly with everything Dreyer was doing. Get a hold of this movie if you can. It is one that I recommend without a doubt.
