Review of Orca (1977) by Senor C — 21 Jun 2006
Having witnessed an Orca whale kill a shark, fisherman Captain Nolan (Richard Harris) spies the chance to make money and sets about catching one - despite the protestations from marine biologist Rachel Bedford (Charlotte Rampling). However, things don't go to plan as he accidently kills the unborn of a pregnant female (a rather gruesome scene for a PG rating) which results in her "enraged" mate trailing Nolan to port hell-bent on revenge!
Whilst this is an obvious rip-off of Jaws, it is actually more enjoyable than it had any right to be. This is due mainly to an energetic perfromance from Harris (some may say OTT), several scenes of unintentional humour and an evocative score from Ennio Morricone. The short running time ensures the film moves at a tight, brisk pace and despite the PG rating it contains some fairly bloody "whale-on-human" attacks. So if you are looking for a good B-movie that won't tax the old grey matter this is certainly worth picking up.
