Review of Orca (1977) by Gregory W — 19 Jan 2008
It's like the writers didn't even try to concoct a half decent (let alone original) plot, but basically replaced Bruce (Jaws) with a super pissed off killer whale that's out for revenge when its mate is killed by fishermen.
The scene of an unborn whale fetus plopping onto a boat deck is ridiculous shock value, as is the rest of the movie which is basically a retelling of Moby Dick meets Jaws. The movie is so much more laughable because it takes itself way too seriously.
Everything from Ennio Morricone's wasted score, close-up shots of the Orca giving the "evil eye" to Richard Harris, Bo Derek (wtf is she doing here?!) & of course the fact that the vengeful(!) Orca is smart enough to demolish an oil refinery & knock a house on stilts into the water.
Utterly ridiculous Jaws rip-off only worth watching for the cinematography & the unintentionally hilarious premious. Oh, & Bo Derek getting her leg chomped off.
