Review of Oranges and Sunshine (2010) by Cecilia C — 27 Mar 2011
Moving, subtle evocation of a want for familial connection. Given the many instances of governmental abuses of the individual in recent history it can be hard to be surprised/outraged by that aspect of this story.
What will move you , though, are the simple, direct performances by all concerned. Time and again they serve to really move you. Its 1980's setting is depicted perfectly, smoke filled pubs, people useing phone boxes etc.
Proving the potency of cheap music , Cat Stevens' Wild World is used to near perfect effect.
