Review of Operation Filmmaker (2008) by Jennifer C — 06 Nov 2008
Superb documentary about aspiring Iraqi filmmaker Muthana Mohmed who's spotted by actor Liev Schreiber after being featured on an MTV feature on Baghdad. Shreiber brings him to Prague to be an intern on Everything Is Illuminated, but the novelty soon wears off for Muthana as he realises he's expected to work and takes offence that he's asked to get snacks for the crew.
Yet his charm and determination gets him another job as PA on Doom, and then a place in film school in England, repeatedly begging for money every step of the way. He's proud, egotistical and at times comes across as ungrateful for the opportunities he's been given.
.. not quite what the filmmakers had expected when they embarked on this project! Fascinating stuff.
