Review of Operation: Endgame (2010) by Gary M — 13 Sep 2010
Failing to hit any kind of mark they might have set, Operation Endgame is a film that is just too hard to put into any genre. Sure it's a spy film but the spies aren't very good, they don't do much of anything and short of being told and the "twist" ending, you'd never even know the film involved spies at all.
With a decent cast of Ellen Barkin, Ving Rhames, Rob Corddry and the newly popular Zach Galifianakis I would have expected better.
Is the movie supposed to be funny? I hope not. I didn't even crack a smile during the film. It's not exactly action packed. The fight scenes that are contained within aren't even any good. The mystery and suspense is missing from the entire film. It's kinda like playing a dinner murder mystery game with friends where you set up a mystery and you know there's a murderer to be caught at the end, but instead of playing the guessing game and trying to figure everything out, everyone decides they're going to beat on each other instead... and nobody knows how to fight.
The concept behind the film has potential. Had the film been full of comedy it would have worked. Had the film gone over the top action, it would have worked. Had the film tried to be a suspenseful mystery, it probably would have worked. Instead we get little bits and pieces from each genre, never doing any of them any good, all to take another political shot at the Bush administration (and technically all those before him) in order to raise Obama to some higher level.
FAIL!
