Review of Operation: Endgame (2010) by D Duckie R — 01 Dec 2010
Operation Endgame is not here to satisfy any need for plot or storyline. It cashes in on characters, repartee, and ultra violence. This is very similar in vein to Albert Pyun's Mean Guns, but it differs enough and cashes in upon it's own strengths. Though character development is still less fulfilling than the before-mentioned movie, it is much deeper then something like Smokin' Aces.
The strengths are immediately obvious. The cast is a who's-who of character actors, and plenty of them are comic actors. Rather than take a disappointing slapstic approach you may expect, the humor is built in to the fact that the characters are as ridiculous as they would have to be, simply to be the amoral and jaded people they must.
The fights are surprisingly believable. They are messy, and they look like they are made to kill. The only somewhat over the top moment is when Zack Galifinakis thows some scissors like a perfectly balanced dagger. Even though there is a lipstick gun and a death by water bottle, they are understated enough to seem real.
This movie should be awful, but it's not. It's a chance to be over the top all in the name of fun. Was there a story? Who cares, there's Rob Cordry and you're pretty sure he could kill you without a care. Is there a plot? Thin, at best. You can stop reading at "blood spraying". Location? Locked in a bunker. It's only memorable for "locked in" and "neat place to kill someone".
The movie tacks on something plot related in the final moments, but don't worry. It washes it all away with a little more murder. For a moment I thought I might be forced to engage in why all this was happening, but then I realized there really was no need.
Sometimes you just wanna watch something. There are plenty of bad movies that think they are more then they are. Operation Endgame knows exactly what it is, and it makes sure it's damned good at being what it is.
Thumbs up for crazy people killing each other.
