Review of Opera (1987) by Mark D — 19 Jul 2009
Opera shows director Argento at his darkest and most stylishly sadistic. Even though it's very easy to guess who the killer is in this one, the visuals and camerawork alone more than make up for it, and some of Argento's best shots are achieved through his surprisingly good direction.
The great revealing scene alone is by far one of the best scenes in Argento's career, as is Daria Nicolodi's death scene involving the peephole. The killer's costume looks great as well, and the death scenes are surprisingly brutal given the fact that you don't always see exactly what happens.
As usual, Argento seems to have a magic touch when it comes to directing animals in interesting ways, and he puts an army of Ravens to good use in this one. I just wish he didn't use heavy metal as background music during a few random scenes.
..it was annoying in Phenomena and it's annoying here. I also wish he would have cut the final scene/epilogue from the film and finished it at the more natural climax in the story. It definitely doesn't ruin the film though, and this remains strong on the list of quintessential Argento films.
