Ok, so Cassavetes is never going to be everyone's cup of black coffee, but I loved this. Gena Rowlands portrayal of an actress in slowmotion freefall mental breakdown is awesome to behold. The supporting case of Joan Blondell, John Cassavetes and the ever excellent Ben Gazarra give a perfectly pitched performances to underline Gena Rowlands character and never overshadow it.

There is a sense of throughout the film that a "fast and loose" approach to the cinematography, script and direction has been employed, but closer examination hints that each scene was meticulously crafted, even the apparently ad-libbed ending upon deeper analysis surely has too many revelations for it simply to be chance.

A brilliant film from a true indie director. Everyone should watch it.
