Review of Opening Night (1933) by Stephanie S — 09 Jul 2008
How do you pick up the pieces of your shattered life? How do you kill the demons that haunt you? How can you simultaneously go through Hell and still pretend like nothing happened? Watching this movie was an experience that can never be duplicated.
Cassavetes does something to your experience, and that is through his ability to create life on screen. There is no plot, only characters. Myrtle (Gena Rowlands) is the star, and yet her tragedy is her inability to face reality.
She tries to find all the answers at the bottom of a bottle, but ignores the bigger problem: Actually living. A heartbreaking and funny movie that captivated me the whole way through.
