Review of Open Water (2004) by Alex T — 04 Apr 2014
You cannot watch this movie. You have to step from the comfort of your sofa and get into the movie. The representation of the characters are, quite ironically us! Yes we are the characters here and we are fighting for survival. Unlike Jaws or Deep Blue Sea, this film heavily relies on emotional attachment from the audience, if not, quite simply; you will hate the film. What shocked me is the realism of the 'cinematic world', as I believe that this example of contemporary cinema really gets inside the audience and exploits their personal fears. As I have already stated, if you don't exploit this concept you will sit for a mere two hours looking at cinema's mother: a mere painting; yes a still picture and nothing more. A clever documentary-style film, made for those who appreciate the artistic realism of cinema, maybe not your mainstream audience though.
Final Rating: (3+) Three Star +.
