Review of Open Water (2004) by Jamison R — 28 Mar 2010
I was personally very disappointed with this movie. I guess the movie is based on true events, but in reality no one really knows what happened to this couple so how can they say that? The only true event in this movie is there were two people who accidentally get left out in the middle of the ocean by a scuba diving boat.
This is enough to guarantee I will never go scuba diving. Most of the movie is spent watching two people bob around in the water for 20 plus hours as live shark bait. Who can honestly know how long the couple survived? They were never found.
They could have died ten minutes after the boat left, in fact, for all we know something happened while they were diving and they were already dead before the boat left them in the ocean. It's even possible one of the other divers was responsible for their death.
The truth is we will never know the true events, and this movie is total fiction. This was an extremely frightening movie, and I would not recommend it to anyone except those who are just curious. That is why I watched it - I was curious.
The photography in this movie is pretty good if you like blue. I am now adequately afraid of the water to last a very long time.
