Review of Open City (2008) by Mateusz Z — 20 May 2008
A great, although not textbook example of Italian neo-realism. Despite all it's melodramatism (music!), propaganda feel, and grotesquely evil Germans, in terms of film form, humor, acting and ability to present a hugely important sociohistorical situation with very little means.
At the same time, although it has no remorse to abandon some characters without clear cut solutions (a classical realist trait), it creates enough drama (unfortunately sometimes also through cheap ploys) to make it a very powerful, engaging and emotional experience.
A piece of movie history that can still be easily appreciated today.
