Review of Open City (2008) by Ryan D — 18 Oct 2009
The film credited as ushering in the italian neo-realist film movement is hampered only by a godawful print and horrible subtitle translation. Whole chunks of dialogue go untranslated, problems that should be corrected via a pending Jan. 2010 Criterion Collection dvd release date.
The film is about the men, women, and children who made up the italian resistance to the german occupation of Rome during World War 2.
It's a fine blend of humor and pathos, it's harrowing ending a strong message of faith in the face of evil. Can't wait to revisit this under better viewing circumstances.
