Review of Open City (2008) by Carlos R — 05 Mar 2011
My love for foreign language films continues to grow after watching this film directed by Roberto Rossellini. "Rome, Open City" chronicles the lives a group of Italians who are living through war-torn, German run Rome.
One of these Italians is a communist, and he is in hiding, trying to avoid the Gustapo (German police). When most people think of Italy during WWII, they think of Mussolini and bunch of Axis soldiers, since Italy was associated with Germany and Hitler, at least that is what I think of.
I never realized how much Italian citizens suffered during that grim period of time and Rossellini brought insite and existence to this past serious issue. "Rome, Open City" is a magnificent film, and it looks real, with some great acting and powerful photography.
Although, I suppose the footage is in poor shape and I did watch it on DVD from 1997, but perhaps that adds great effect to the film, which I believe it does.
