Review of Only You (1994) by Corey B — 29 Jan 2011
There's an interesting movie hiding at the core of Only You that gets swallowed up by the sentimental, Hollywood romance movie cliches (I mean it ends with an airport run...so...). But the interesting movie, and one that pops out occasionally, is how crazy we make ourselves when trying to find the perfect partner.
Because at its core this is a movie about two crazy people who find each other, and use "love" to disguise how crazy they are. Tomei is so adamant about finding Mr. Right that she doesn't look in front of her, and Downey Jr. is so in love with being in love that he will do anything to capture that feeling. These two are so caught up in their own worlds that they never have any chemistry together because it doesn't seem like they care about anything other than themselves.
There are some cute moments here and there, and the twists are fun enough, but Jewison keeps pouring on the schmaltz, and glossing over the true nature of the characters.
