Review of Only You (1994) by Fawn O — 15 Nov 2018
Marisa Tomei plays the lead role, Faith, in this sparsely entertaining, shamefully cliche discount variety romance; her ginger performance lacks the strength of presence required for a leading role. Tomei is actually overwhelmed by her better suited co-stars, Robert Downey Jr. as the male lead and love interest, and Bonnie Hunt playing the role of her more emotionally intriguing best friend, Kate. If the film had been more about Kate's midlife crises with Tomei in a supporting role with all of Faith's clingy "Destino" gibberish, it might have made a better story. Downey Jr. is fairly charming, but he deserved better material. Faith was too much of a shallow shell for a romantic fellow to truly fall so madly in love with her as suddenly as he does. I mean, to what was he attaching himself so tightly? Albeit beautiful with exquisite fashion sense, she came across hollow and naive. While it's an easy film to swallow, I must state that just because it's edible, that doesn't mean we should consume it.
