Review of Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) by Edward A — 07 Mar 2014
On an asthetic level there's a lot to like about OLLA but everything seems to only be skin deep...there's no weight to this film and in the end it just feels rather hollow. The actors are all great though several of supporting are underutilised.
The art direction and cinematography is beautiful and there is an incredibly interesting a rich world in this film; the spin on the mythology is very intriguing. The soundtrack is great and plays an important role in the film and the overall tone of the film is very immersive.
..but in the end this film has nothing to say, all it does it present a world but it never explores it enough and there is no plot to put together so in the end it just feels like spending a couple of days with these character without any stakes or reasons to invest in the movie.
