Review of Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) by John F — 16 Mar 2014
The Velvet Underground of vampire movies.
If Bohemian intellectual poets could really live hundreds of years, what would their record collections look like? Their books? The knicknacks around their houses? Jim Jarmusch presents Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as Adam and Eve, surely the hippest nosferati since The Lost Boys. They're holed up in Adam's baroque and opulent nest in the ruins of suburban Detroit (the area which itself should be a character in the film). When Adam's not trying to score their next fix of O neg, he's noodling out "funeral songs" on his vintage electric guitar collection... Until Eve's prodigal l'il sis Ava (Mia Wasikowska, "Stoker") crashes the den with predictable havoc in her wake. The story is minimalist, but the atmosphere is just dripping with a delicious psychedelic swirl of nouveau-retro-goth-junkie hipness. Superb soundtrack. Coming to theaters soon, a fine ride.
