Review of Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) by Mad M — 02 May 2014
A whimsical, existential tale of vampires who have lived a REALLY long time, and mostly in a benign way. They have chosen the artistic life for many centuries, and continue to be inspired enough to choose an ethical life over scavenging and hedonistic pleasure seeking.
They are amused by the hipsters in the crumbling Detroit, but the loss of their beat generation friends also weighs down on them spiritually. They have seen the life and art cycle grow and end for too many generations, and both the main characters are worried this might be their last hurrah.
It's a movie that doesn't have a strong plot, but the characters are interesting enough to sustain the slow moving narrative. It's very anti-gore, and anti-action but quirky in a way that will definitely appeal to the hipster masses.
