Review of Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) by Amilcar A — 04 May 2014
This movie is an art-house fanatic's wet dream. Jim Jarmusch, Tilda Swinton and intellectual vampires? Students from liberal arts colleges across the country suddenly had a collective orgasm.
Too bad more people won't watch this movie since it's very good. It's a different take on vampires in a much more contemporary way.
These characters are not bloodthirsty killers or idiotic plain characters from Twilight. They are mostly bored, over-read and intellectualized night walkers that are concerned about not getting intoxicated with blood poisoning.
The movie has a killer soundtrack, it's very well written and cast to perfection. The main characters look so much like what a real vampire would that it's scary.
The two minor setbacks are really not a big deal. First, the movie is just too dark and makes it a bit tiring. I get the darkness but this was excessive. Also, some of the intellectual dialogues were so excessively cliched it was funny.
In any case, great movie all around/.
