Review of Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) by Alexander N — 13 May 2014
One of my favorite Jarmusch movies now. Dead Man's still his masterpiece, but like that movie, he manages to breathe fresh life into a genre that's all but dead: vampire movies. No one's managed to capture the allure of faded grandeur that they represent - and the relationship that has to sense of slow decay and collapse that pervades our world now - as he has with this film.
It asks the question that we're all asking more or less every day: we acknowledge that everything is basically completely fucked and horrible, so what do we do? We cling savagely to those bits of beauty that still peek through the gloom now and then, and we just keep going.
