Review of Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) by Jd D — 05 Jul 2014
Only Lover Left Alive is an incredible tale involving two vampires who find themselves, not in the extreme as many other films do, but rather the mundane. Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton are incredible playing two vampires who are married yet, live apart, trying to find the things that get them trough.
For Adam (Hiddleston), he loves music and thinks that society doesn't appreciate the art the way they should. He lives in Detroit, a once great city, now in ruins which metaphorically represents his current state. Eve (Swinton) is off looking for great stories and new experiences, which keep her hopeful.
The brilliance of the film is that the narrative doesn't force typical tropes or character traits, but rather lets Adam and Eve soak in the mundane of their lives and the things that have come to define them. The atmosphere is contagious and engaging. It's simple yet vibrant and the performances carry the film in some absolutely riveting ways.
Jim Jarmusch's direction is fantastic and you have to praise the supporting roles from John Hurt, Mia Wasikolska and Anton Yelchin.
