Review of Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) by Clem A — 06 Jul 2014
The life of a vampire isnâ??t everlasting. Tom Hiddleston who plays Loki in the Thor films stars as Adam, a reclusive underground musician living in Detroit who happens to be a 500 year old vampire. Depressed about what has happened to human society, (he refers to people as Zombies & weary of the constant struggle to procure untainted blood, Adam is contemplating suicide.
Adam is also lonely without his love through the ages, Eve (played by Oscar winner Tilda Swinton), a 3000 year old vampire living in Tangiers. Eve is set-up is Tangiers with good blood supplied by her close friend, Christopher Marlowe (played by Oscar nominee John Hurt), the anonymous writer of Shakespeareâ??s plays.
When Eve sees Adam demeanor on her iphone, she decides to go to him in Detroit. The reunion between Adam & Eve is rudely interrupted by the unwelcome arrivel of Eveâ??s careless sister Ava (played by Mia Wasikowska), who hasnâ??t leaned to keep a low profile & contain her wild side.
With freash blood not avilable, Adam & Eve will have to decide either to accept death or feed on humans to survive. Acclamed Indie writer & director Jim Jarmusch has evoked a rich tale of love & life though beautiful cinematography & mesmerizing music.
The performances from the cast which also include Anton Yelchin as Ian, a human who Adam relies on getting things for him, were excellent. The love story between Tom & Tilda was perfectly executed with the depth of emotion & wry humor of a long relationship.
The soundtrack for the film was amazing. This is the best vampire love story I have seen since the 2008 Swedish film, Let the Right One In & Iâ??m thrilled I chose this film as my 30th birthday film.
CANâ??T MISS FILM.
