Review of Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) by Tami N — 23 Aug 2014
At first I took the title of this movie to be literal but I feel it's metaphoric...they are the only self perceived lovers left alive that appreciate all that would appeal to the intellectual mind.
..lovers of intellectual stimulation. This idea manifests itself with their hoarding of books, music and appreciation of instruments and everything of the like. They feel the best of humanity has been lost on the modern world.
(Hiddleston's character has felt this time and time again apparently throughout the centuries) -This may have been a tad "too" indie for me but I can appreciate the melancholy mood set by the characters and the question of how long true love can last.
..it appears eternal among them as they always fall back to each other through the centuries as if each is a need to survive and to be in world so dire. Hiddleston's character refers to mortals as "the zombies" quite often.
The actors truly make this film...I would have preferred more story and answered questions of their lineage than feeling immersed in their pool of worldly questions, and overall disappointment in humanity.
That felt too redundant a theme throughout. Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton are flawless in performance...the rest of the movie at best is....ok.
