Review of Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) by Ted W — 11 Sep 2014
Haunting and elegiac with a powerful sense of ennui this film presents a stark vision of the emptiness of society driven by greed as viewed by two vampire lovers. They watch as the world crumbles as humans (referred to as zombies) have damaged it to the point where their own blood has become poisoned.
Through their long lives Adam and Eve have learnt from and taught great scientists, writers and musicians all long dead. This is not a film for those who enjoy violence or bloodshed there is none of that here, it is rather a thoughtful examination of the changing and damaged world we live in and how to survive in it.
Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton and John Hurt present their vampires as wistful creatures existing in the world but separate from those around them. Only Eve's sister Ava acts like a modern human and she is the most destructive of them all.
