Review of Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) by Alison C — 25 Jan 2015
This movie was hypnotic. It moved so slowly and you just got to soak in and revel in each moment and that's how the vampires themselves seem to live. Nicely done. I was struck by how romantic I found this movie. When Adam and Eve reunite, It was just so darn romantic and delicious how they touched each other. Their love for each other was just so much more believable and palatable for me than most movies when they try to tackle lovers reuniting scenes. Usually they just hug. But in this Adam goes to kiss her and there's this wonderful hesitation before he does kiss her and then kisses her progressively harder. And he takes off her gloves and brings her hand to his face and I was kinda moved by his show of love for his wife. And how they cared for each other and she supported and nurtured his hobby with music. It was just fascinating for me to watch how they would sleep tangled together and just the way their bodies moved together doing the simplest things. And how they shared with each other. Just. Wow! This was one of the most romantic movies I've ever seen. This movie made me want a relationship like that. It's a shame that most romantic or romcom movies can't capture love the way this movie did. Movies like this and Secretary actually know how to tell a romantic story without ridiculous expectations and insane notions about love.
Anyway! The acting was wonderful. Tom Hiddleston was sexy. It was one of those movies you just have to experience. I'm not really sure if they are supposed to be THE Adam and Eve or if the names are just trying to get you thinking that direction. I liked that they thought of humans as "zombies". It was a more elevated look at the world of vampires and romance and I really respect that. It was a movie that's more of an experience and I really enjoyed it.
