Review of Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) by David J — 28 Jul 2015
Jim Jarmush films are a bit of an acquired taste, and Only Lovers Left Alive is no exception. A love drama/comedy unlike anything I have ever seen, the film is a misty, and extremely slow moving tale of two vampires with a relationship that has existed for centuries. Hiddleston is magnetic is a pale, surly musician who detests attention, and Swinton is just as good as the passionate intellectual who keeps him relatively sane. The movie is polished by a dark and somewhat brooding/haunting score full of guitars and mandolins playing depressing minor chords, slowly, letting the audience sink into the lives of the protagonists.
I mentioned that the movie is an acquired taste, and I wasn't in that category. I found myself getting bored often, and even though I appreciated the acting and creation quality, I didn't really like the finished product.
