Review of Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) by James U — 29 Sep 2015
This movie is what intelligent vampires are all about following the flow of the world around them while they remain ageless in body but not in mind. Hiddleston is amazing as this rocker who just hates everything humanity is doing while Swinton is amazing as well remaining more inquisitive, hopeful even. Adam and Eve they're named, very nice. Also, Mia Wasikowska.
As Ava was perfectly cast to be the vampire you wanted to see get staked for being so f*cking stupid and obnoxious. It's poetic that she ends up being Adam and Eve's undoing, her childish nature seems to have only gotten worse over the ages as a vampire. Worth a watch if you're a fan of World of Darkness games as this feel like how vampires would be forced to survive in a world ruled by humans, hiding amongst the shadows of Detroit in a abandoned building somewhere. The final scenes of their desperation are great as well but I feel like the ending didn't answer the question, "What are we going to do?".
