Review of Only God Forgives (2013) by Nicolò M — 09 Mar 2014
Only God Forgives.
Coming from the successful â~Driveâ(TM) Director Nicolas Winding Refn relieses a movie that has created a clash between fans. Either you heated either you Love it. Most reviews on websites end in perfect 50% split.
However in our opinion; this is courageous movie, because coming directly from a direct point of view of the world seen by the director and not from the studios; more authorship and less dictatorship. Hence a full immersion in Nicolas Winding Refn perverted and analytical view on relationships with -to what seems to most- â~painstakingâ(TM) slow pace and long takes to create a parallel universe that could only live on a movie screen (not reality at all). The movie is cinematically beautiful shot by cinematographer Larry Smith who also worked with Kubrick's 'Eyes wide shutâ(TM). The acting is great and tides up whit all the elements presented in the film of what is fiction or â~realâ(TM). Ryan Gosling act isn't his best, whereas unkonw actor for many Vithaya Pansringarm is superb in his role as the cop-God I am-the-righteous type character, and Kristen Scott Thomas is excellent in her sophisticated role of business-driven / love-powered mother sheâ(TM)s as unreal as the movie can get.
The movie plays with the roles on powers and the empowered, scrubbing into the fragile yet strong minds of the characters.
To conclude this movie could be an aberration of 'phallic' proportions -to be in tune with the film- or simply a cult, or as someone else said a masterpiece. You choose... :-).
