Review of Only God Forgives (2013) by Alexander M — 31 May 2014
Let me start by saying that this film is not for everyone. If you have never heard of Nicolas Winding Refn, then you should look up his previous films. Only God Forgives is a film that many people have called a masterpiece, and other people calling one of the worst movies they have ever seen.
Now this film is great, but it's just cause how it's structured it can be viewed as a simple, slow, and people who hardly talk as a silent film. Now I loved Drive, I believe it's one of the most underrated films right now.
Now if someone came up to me, and said that they hated it, I'll understand because IT'S NOT FOR EVERYBODY. I can't highly make it clear how important to know that. Now Nicolas Winding Refn has made films like this before, like his film Valhalla Rising where the main character literally never says one word.
The character's in this film aren't characters they're metaphors of something. Now if you watch this film, you must pay attention to detail, because you can't just casually watch you must pay attention.
The reason why I liked this film was because I knew what I was getting into, and I was expecting something different. I got that. I can't call this a normal film because it is not. It is a weird film, and I have never seen anything like it.
That's the biggest compliment I can give this film. The directing and look of the film is beautiful. The score by Cliff Martinez is both haunting and fantastic. The use of location, and overall look of the film is fantastic.
The acting is great, but like how I said before, these aren't characters, they're just vessels for you to experience the film. In time people will look at this film differently, and surely will appreciate it more.
I love this film, however I'll understand if you hate this film because it's not for everyone, but I knew what I was getting into, I had my expectations. And I got a really great film. One of the best films of 2013.
