Review of Only God Forgives (2013) by Jondoc — 27 Jan 2015
A divisive film. Love it or hate it. It's dream-like noir cinematography is undeniably masterly. Reminded me of the best movie moments from Martin Scorcese, David Lynch, Jonathan Glazer or Sergio Leone.
What was most brilliant was it's narrative style - perfectly unfolding, revealing, enthralling, emotionally satisfying right until the last frame. Yes it is violent, but the violence always served the story.
The main themes of ethics and retribution felt so right. Gosling played the perfect anti-hero and his nemesis Pansringham is one of the most compellingly bad-ass cops in movie history - horrific and honourable in equal measures.
