If you think Michael Bay can make an action film, you haven't seen this 1939 masterpiece. Yes, the special effects are dated and there are one or two plot points that just don't work, but Howard Hawks' love letter to professionals has everything a modern-day adventure should have: respect for its fascinating characters, comedy, great moments of bonding and an honest look at male friendship.

Cary Grant is commanding in his first dramatic performance as a stoic pilot (consider this training for his role in Notorious 7 years later) and Jean Arthur's soft touch to the Hawksian Woman is both appropriate and appreciated.

To me it's Thomas Mitchell's sensitive performance as an aging pilot that stuck with me long after the credits rolled. All these elements are what make the special effects truly "special.

" A minor masterpiece.
