Review of Ong Bak 3 (2010) by Dylan E — 05 Nov 2010
The first Ong Bak was a really enjoyable film. Sure, its story was clichà (C)d and dated but the core of a martial arts film - the fighting was superb with scenes you want to watch again and again. Ong Bak 2 was just ok, with the fight scenes not being nearly as enjoyable and the story passable again. But Ong Bak 3 is like a totally different film, as if they spent their entire budget on the 2-3 fight scenes in the movie (seriously) and had to pad the rest out with an awful love story and Jaa's return from the dead. As if the comical effect of the "beautiful" damsel wearing layers of makeup amongst a village of old shriveled women wasn't enough to make you lose any respect for the film, Jaa's acting is awful throughout never once drawing the viewer in or creating any interest.
The story is no better with a higgledy-piggledy mix of eastern and western cinema that only confuses the viewer about what the film is trying to achieve. All the fight scenes have the enemies standing around in a circle whilst Jaa takes them down one by one, its dull and boring.
I rarely feel like I have wasted an hour or two of my life watching a film, but after watching this I wish I had watched the washing dry instead.
