Review of Ong Bak 2 (2008) by Vincent B — 02 Jun 2010
It seems that the best way to truly mar a Tony Jaa film is to 1.) Put Tony Jaa in charge and/or 2.) Try to make an actual film. The first Ong Bak seemed to know this, so did the lesser but still quite entertaining The Protector.
Neither of these films had much concern for thier plots but both were successes because they understood that the audience would rather see Jaa face-fuck a goon with his foot than watch him emote. Ong Bak 2 forgets this.
No, Ong Bak 2 ignores this. Jaa, who demanded control of the film before losing it, going missing and becoming involved in black magic while shooting, has helmed a vanity piece that isn't worth giving a shit about.
However, the action, which is peppered throughout and happens frequantly enough to keep me quasi-engaged, is cool enough and the jungle can't help but be pretty. It's enough to buoy a 2 1/2 to what might be my lowest 3.
