Review of Ong Bak 2 (2008) by Jebus C — 02 Jul 2010
What in the world happened to Tony Jaa? He had the world at his feet after Ong Bak and followed it with a decent hit The Protector. And yet Ong Bak 2 is almost a complete failure. Jaa stepped behind the camera and lost his way.
The feature is a failure as a movie. It has a mess of a plot, too many useless characters and fight scenes that feel tagged on. You'd think it'd come off, at the very least, as a display of Jaa's talents as a martial artist and yet at best its a passable demonstration of his skill.
Which is the movie's real failure. It has a strong cliffhanger ending, which sets up an unneccessary 3rd film, but I can't help but feel this whole undertaking was pointless. Now Jaa has moved off to a monastery to become a monk.
If only other filmmakers took that sort of sabbatical when they made a bad film!
