Review of One Week (2008) by Dervilla O — 18 May 2011
Great cinemography & LOVED the soundtracks. I agree with some comments that there is a certain blandness to the movie but I actually think the director did this deliberately. Complete contrast to Hollywood who would have gone into melodramatic overkill.
Ben Tyler is an ordinary guy who blends without much note into the all consuming & conformist vanilla suburbian lifstyle. News of his illness shocks him into take a literal & meataphorical journey.
The choice of some key shots of Canada's "tourist" trail was a bit cheesy but is somehow reaslistic - Ben is not that adventurous to delve completely in to the greater unkown. When you take away the metaphors, the movie is likeable & credible & Joshua Jacksondid a great job in developing the character.
I saw a French movie some weeks back about a gay photographer with a similar prognosis - can't recall the name - but it was very good!
