Review of One Night at McCool's (2001) by Mahsa T — 24 Apr 2008
One Night at McCool's is about the etheric Liv Tyler scantily dressed or in all wet outfit washing a car. Stuff like that, and nothing else. No trace of her being etheric in this movie. This is so far from "Stealing Beauty" as humanly possible.
She's a cock-tease, and Matt Dillon gets to do the wild thing with her. So does Paul Reiser. John Goodman wants to get down to it, and in the end there is a promise that Michael Douglas gets there.
While Dillon and Reiser score, Tyler never undresses. Damn! Neither does Goodman, thank God! This movie could be truncated into a ten minute flick of extreme close-ups of Tyler, that's all there is to it.
That would suffice to do it. And she'd do better with a little more subtle touch of a lipstick. I'd rather watch her as etheric as she can be rather than in her role in this film as a tart or a harlot.
Oh yeah, there's a plot too trying to justify the close-ups of Liv. But... Never mind the plot. There's not much to it. The star I awarded to this movie comes from the close-ups. Then I took it away because there's no nudity.
Then I gave it back because of the strong presence of Andrew Dice Clay in a double role of a crook and his lunatic brother.
